Miðvikudaginn 29.október kl.20.30 mun Vestur-Íslendingurinn Freya Björg Olafson og Pierre Andrieux frumsýna gerninginn AVATAR í Kling & Bang gallerí. Þetta verður fyrsti hluti verksins af þremur, en allir 3 hlutarnir verða sýndir í Winnipeg í Kanada, maí 2009.
Hugmyndafræðilega, vinnur AVATAR út frá aðferðum ímyndasköpunar og hvernig henni er dreift í gegnum tækni og þ.m.t. veraldarvefnum. Það er ekki bein áhersla eða áhugi endilega á tækninni sem slíkri, heldur vinnur AVATAR með andlega sambandið okkar við þessa tækni og þeirri hegðun sem skapast út frá þessu sambandi. AVATAR veltir fyrir sér hvernig ímyndir eru smíðaðar í alþjóðlegum tæknivæddum heimi, þar sem hlutirnir eru gífurlega ýktir, þar sem ímyndir eru búnar til út frá módelum, íkonum og oft í andstæðum við sinn uppruna. Hvað gerist þegar kona er líka karlmaður, þegar Marilyn Monroe er allt í senn Jane Fonda, lögreglumaður, flugfreyja, þungarokksaðdáandi og Charles Manson?

AVATAR is a new performance work initiated by Freya Björg Olafson and Pierre Andrieux with the support of The Canada Council for the Arts, The Manitoba Arts Council and The Winnipeg Arts Council. Work began on Avatar in residence at PAF - Performing Arts Forum in St. Erme-Outre-et-Ramecourt (France) during September 2008 and followed up creating during October at SIM - Icelandic Association for Visual Artists. The performance at Kling&Bang Galleri on October 29 culminates phase one of Avatar, work on the project will continue in 2009 to develop phase two and three of this trilogy. The premiere of the full work will be in Winnipeg, Manitoba in May 2009.
Conceptually, AVATAR explores methods of creating, validating and disseminating one’s identity through the use of technology and the Internet. It is not so much technology itself that interests us; moreover we are interested in our psychological relationship to these tools and the behavior that results. Avatar questions the construction of one’s identity in our global technologicalized world, heavily saturated with cultural references; wherein identity is constructed in relationship to models, icons and sources often contradictory. What occurs when a woman is also a man, when Marilyn Monroe is also Jane Fonda /a police officer /an air stewardess/ a heavy metal fan and Charles Manson? ARTISTS BIOGRAPHIES
Pierre Andrieux spent his childhood in French Polynesia. He graduated with full Honors from L'Ecole Supérieure D'art D'Aix en Provence with the equivalent to a Masters Degree and was awarded the Prix Gras Savoye Art in 2006. Andrieux works with performance using sound, video and the interactive technology. Conceptually, he uses the resources of the visual arts yet applies an interdisciplinary and performative sensibility. In performances he uses his voice and body, in association with either low andor high technology to question human behavior often revealing certain absurdities of existence. The collaboration with other artists and technology are the mainspring of Andrieux’s work, a place for the reflection on the fragility of the individual in the current, ultra-technological and globalized world. Since his gradation from les beaux-arts he has realized many performances in France and in Europe, both in collaboration and solo. Notably, Andrieux was chosen as one of the French artists for the 2008 "Biennale of Young Creators of Europe and Mediterranean" that took place in Puglia in Italy in May. A recent highlight was a performance at The International Performing Arts Festival TRAMA by Fondation Serralves (Porto, Portugal).
Freya Björg Olafson is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist who works with video, audio and performance. Her creations have been presented/exhibited nationally as well as internationally. Including the Plug In Institute for Contemporary Art (Winnipeg), Interaccess Electronic Media Arts Center (Toronto), Winnipeg Art Gallery, Núna (now) Festival (Winnipeg, Toronto, Iceland), Groundswell New Music Series (Winnipeg), O.K. Centrum (Linz, Austria), and Springboard Danse Montréal among others. As performer and creator, Freya blends 6 years classical training in the Professional Program of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet with the contemporary facility achieved through her completion of the Bachelor of Arts Honors degree in dance jointly offered by the School of Contemporary Dancers and the University of Winnipeg. She combines her finesse in movement with the directness of her performance art, video and theory studies from the University of Manitoba School of Art and her subsequent completion of a Master of Fine Arts Degree in New Media from the Transart Institute / Donau Universitat in Krems, Austria.
