Sara Riel 2009
RETURN TICKET
07. 02. 2009 - 08. 03. 2009

OPENS SATURDAY 7th OF FEBRUARY AT 5 PM.

Sara Riel's exhibition, RETURN TICKET, is based on her earlier work, titled MADE IN CHINA, shown in Xiamen, China, in 2008. Riel's work is affected by the context of living in new surroundings, including the sense of discovery and the irony of feeling isolated in the world's most populated country. The influence of Tai Chi, the concept of yin and yang, and the search for balance are emphasised in Riel's new work. This exhibition employs a variety of media and is a continuation of the ideas and memories Riel experienced in China, as seen through the perspective of returning home. RETURN TICKET includes a combination of photography, video, installation, painting, drawing and collage.

The artist Sara Riel (1980) lives and works in Reykjavík. Sara graduated from Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee 2005. She left the school in 2006 after winning the DAAD award and being honored with the title Meisterschuler. Early in her years of education Sara became active in making exibitions, both in the white cube environment and in the streets of several cities around the world, where she became rather known in the Urban Art scene in Europe . Sara makes artwork in all kind of sizes and shapes and every material and mediums are accepted. She uses the methods that the world has to offer, to their full extent, to lift certain events and experiences, stories and moments up into reality. The pieces tell stories but are at the same time ambiguous and open. They are meant to activate the imagination of the viewer and induce thoughts about the passing moment. In comparison with literature and music they are rather poems than novels and sounds rather than songs. Saras extractions are based on and point to Urban art, the cartoon tradition, idea-art, minimalism and graphic design.

Sara Riel has among other things exhibited her artwork in the show Big Geezers í Scion gallery in L.A (2008), Made in China in Xiamen (2008), I am longing, but I don´t know for what, in Artist House in Teheran (2007), Vélakostur/Machinery in 101 gallery in Reykjavík (2007), On the edge, The Film Archive in Auckland, New Zeland (2007), Tischgesellschaften in RAAB gallery in Berlin (2006), Ding Dong Festival in Hamburg, (2006), Das Unfassbare in 2YK in Berlin, Germany (2005), Live, in Tokyo Wondersites in Tokyo, Japan (2005), Fox Project in Copenhagen (2005), Big Gs in Montana Shop & Gallery in Barcelona, Backjumps Live-Issue in Kunstraum Bethanien, in Berlin, Germany (2005 and 2004), Berlin North (in collaboration with Egill Sæbjörnsson, Sigurður Guðjónsson, Ásdís Sif Gunnarsdóttir and Elín Hansdóttir) in Hamburger Bahnhof in í Berlin, Germany (2004).
